It was two o’clock before Dr. Kemp had finished his work for the night He rose, yawned (он встал, зевнул), and went downstairs to bed (и спустился к кровати = в спальню). He had already removed his coat and vest (он уже снял пиджак и жилет), when he noticed that he was thirsty (когда почувствовал, что хочет пить; thirsty— испытывающий жажду; thirst— жажда). He took a candle and went down to the dining-room in search of a syphon and whiskey

“Was that a letter?” he asked.

“Only a runaway ring, sir,” she answered.

“I’m restless to-night,” he said to himself. He went back to his study, and this time attacked his work resolutely. In a little while he was hard at work again, and the only sounds in the room were the ticking of the clock and the subdued shrillness of his quill, hurrying in the very centre of the circle of light his lampshade threw on his table.

It was two o’clock before Dr. Kemp had finished his work for the night. He rose, yawned, and went downstairs to bed. He had already removed his coat and vest, when he noticed that he was thirsty. He took a candle and went down to the dining-room in search of a syphon and whiskey.

Dr. Kemp’s scientific pursuits have made him a very observant man (научные занятия доктора Кемпа сделали его очень наблюдательным; pursuit — преследование; занятие, дело), and as he recrossed the hall (и, когда он снова проходил через холл), he noticed a dark spot on the linoleum near the mat at the foot of the stairs (то заметил темное пятно на линолеуме, возле коврика внизу лестницы). He went on upstairs (он поднялся наверх), and then it suddenly occurred to him to ask himself (и вдруг спросил себя: «ему неожиданно пришло в голову спросить себя»; to occur to — приходитьвголову) what the spot on the linoleum might be (чем же может быть пятно на линолеуме = откуда взялось пятно). Apparently some subconscious element was at work At any rate, he turned with his burden (во всяком случае, он развернулся со своей ношей), went back to the hall (вернулся в холл), put down the syphon and whiskey (поставил сифон /с содовой/ и виски), and bending down, touched the spot (и, нагнувшись, дотронулся до пятна). Without any great surprise he found it had the stickiness and colour of drying blood

He took up his burden again, and returned upstairs (он опять взял свою ношу и вернулся наверх), looking about him and trying to account for the blood-spot (глядя по сторонам и пытаясь объяснить кровавое пятно). On the landing he saw something and stopped astonished The door-handle of his own room was blood-stained

Dr. Kemp’s scientific pursuits have made him a very observant man, and as he recrossed the hall, he noticed a dark spot on the linoleum near the mat at the foot of the stairs. He went on upstairs, and then it suddenly occurred to him to ask himself what the spot on the linoleum might be. Apparently some subconscious element was at work. Without any great surprise he found it had the stickiness and colour of drying blood.

He took up his burden again, and returned upstairs, looking about him and trying to account for the blood-spot. On the landing he saw something and stopped astonished. The door-handle of his own room was blood-stained.

He looked at his own hand It was quite clean (она была совершенно чистой), and then he remembered that the door of his room had been open (тут он вспомнил, что дверь его комнаты была открыта) when he came down from his study (когда он спустился из кабинета), and that consequently he had not touched the handle at all (и, следовательно, он вообще не прикасался к ручке). He went straight into his room, his face quite calm (он вошел прямо в свою комнату с совершенно спокойным лицом) — perhaps a trifle more resolute than usual (быть может, оно было немного решительнее, чем обычно). His glance, wandering inquisitively, fell on the bed On the counterpane was a mess of blood (на стеганом покрывале была лужа крови; mess — беспорядок, грязь), and the sheet had been torn (а простыня разорвана). He had not noticed this before because he had walked straight to the dressing-table On the further side the bedclothes were depressed (с другой стороны постельное белье было смято; to depress — подавлять; опускать, нажимать; further — /сравнит. степеньотfar/ — болеедалекий, удаленный) as if someone had been recently sitting there (будто кто-то недавно сидел здесь).

Then he had an odd impression that he had heard a low voice say

“Good Heavens! — Kemp (Боже мой — Кемп)!”

“Good Heavens! — Kemp!”

But Dr. Kemp was no believer in voices

He stood staring at the tumbled sheets Was that really a voice He looked about again, but noticed nothing further than the disordered and blood-stained bed Then he distinctly heard a movement across the room (тут он отчетливо услышал какое-то движение в комнате), near the wash-hand stand (возле умывальника). All men, however highly educated (все люди, какими бы высокообразованными они ни были), retain some superstitious inklings (сохраняют крупицы суеверия: «суеверные /слабые/ представления»; inkling — намек /на что-либо/; an inkling of truth — крупица истины; легкое подозрение; слабое представление /of — о чем-либо/). The feeling that is called “eerie” came upon him He closed the door of the room (он закрыл дверь комнаты), came forward to the dressing-table (подошел к туалетному столику), and put down his burdens (и поставил сифон и бутылку: «свои грузы = то, что держал в руках»). Suddenly, with a start (вдруг, вздрогнув), he perceived a coiled and blood-stained bandage of linen rag hanging in mid-air (он увидел, как обмотанная /вокруг чего-то/ повязка в крови, сделанная из разорванной простыни, висит в воздухе; rag— лоскут, тряпка, обрывок), between him and the wash-hand stand (между ним и умывальником).

He stared at this in amazement It was an empty bandage, a bandage properly tied but quite empty He would have advanced to grasp it (он бы приблизился к ней и схватил ее), but a touch arrested him (но чье-то прикосновение остановило его), and a voice speaking quite close to him (и голос совсем рядом с ним произнес).
